Since the initial concept of the Faces of Surfing Nowak understood a strong method in capturing her subjects would be meeting them and photographing them in their own environments. "They are the most comfortable when they are in 'their' natural light," she says, "that light travels through each painting and their personalities and environment stays within my mind while I am making the piece."
Nowak first noticed Tracy Feith’s surfing enthusiasm through his unique clothing when she frequent his then boutique on the Montauk Highway, where she spent her summers painting. Nowak met Feith in his store at the posh Surf Lodge, and later photographed him at his cottage in Lake Montauk. Nowak remembers the mid-day shoot as being a classic North Eastern colorful sunny day, and how the whole ‘scene’ replicated his mismatching clothing, which you can seen within Feith’s vibrant background.
